The conflict in the Sahel is upending lives and livelihoods and forcing more people to flee in desperation. The climate emergency, declining agricultural production, inter-communal tensions and global economic headwinds that increase food and fuel prices are the major drivers of hunger in Central Sahel – including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Niger. 

WFP is boosting resilience at scale in the Sahel by restoring land, building community infrastructure, promoting education, improving nutrition and health, and creating jobs for women and young people in the five Sahel countries – Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, Mali and Niger.

Since 2018, WFP has worked closely with national governments and partners on an integrated resilience programme in the Sahel countries including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger.

In collaboration with the Government, from 30 September to 04 October, WFP led a high-level climate and resilience mission including senior climate, development, and humanitarian officials from the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United Staes of America. The visit allowed partners to see first-hand efforts by the Government of Mauritania and WFP

The Nobel Peace Prize gives WFP recognition “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict”.

The English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean comprises several Small Island Developing States that face similar challenges in managing economic, financial, geographic and climate-related impacts that affect the food and nutrition security of the most vulnerable, particularly in crises.

Access to clean cooking remains a neglected aspect of humanitarian response in displacement settings, largely due to limited capacity, lack of dedicated funding and a focus on short term needs. Despite being a fossil fuel, Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) is preferred to burning biomass to limit health, economic and environmental impact.

It discusses the context and foundations of RBD’s RMM approach, presents the key principles of RBD’s work and the regional resilience analysis plan, and presents the progress made to date, lessons learned and way forward.
