Mali is a vast, land-locked country in the heart of the Sahel region. With social indicators among the lowest in the world, the country ranks 188 out of 193 on UNDP’s 2022 Human Development Index and faces serious challenges in the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 on Zero Hunger and improved nutrition.

The conflict in the Sahel is upending lives and livelihoods and forcing more people to flee in desperation. The climate emergency, declining agricultural production, inter-communal tensions and global economic headwinds that increase food and fuel prices are the major drivers of hunger in Central Sahel – including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali and Niger. 

Annual Country Reports (ACR) are a key accountability document produced by country offices on a yearly basis which inform donors how their funds were used during the reporting year. Their purpose is to tell WFP’s performance story in an accurate, transparent and evidence-based manner by assessing the effectiveness, efficiency and economy of our operations in our pursuit towards zero hunger.

The evaluation covered CSP and T-ICSP activities implemented between January 2018 and mid-2023.

In 2022, the World Food Programme in Mali provided food and nutritional assistance to more than 1.6 million food-insecure people. WFP Operational UpdateThe floods have destroyed over 85,000 hectares of cropland, 730,000 mt of cereal stocks (from previous harvest), and forcibly displaced thousands of people who have been forced to move out of their homes, according to the government.Most of the people displaced by the floods have sought refuge in public buildings - with 100 schools serving as shelters and 79 school buildings

The impact evaluation contributes to the Office of Evaluation's Climate & Resilience impact evaluation window.
