WFP in collaboration with the Government and the UN Agency for Refugees has also started shifting from providing refugees with homogeneous support to a ‘needs-based’ approach. In this approach, WFP will provide food assistance based on the food security and socio-economic status of each family.

In September 2015, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commissioned Kimetrica to undertake an assessment of the livelihood activities and vulnerability profiles of the refugees in Kakuma with a view to establishing the feasibility of targeting food and Non-Food Item (NFI) assistance.

The first round of Bamba Chakula traders in Kakuma have been selected! Kakuma refugee camp in northwest Kenya is home to 161,000 refugees. Local communities around the camp largely comprise Turkana pastoralists, and although robust informal trade takes place between the camp and outside communities, the Turkana feel that they benefit little from the presence of the camp.
