Assessment was conducted in September 2016, involving interviews in some 619 households. A two stage sampling design was employed including selection of 54 Enumeration Areas (EAs). Probability proportional to population size was employed in the first stage to select the EAs while in the second stage, households were selected using systematic random sampling.

In September 2017, an assessment was conducted in Juba urban areas (including Kator, Juba town, and Munuki) to understand the current food security and nutrition status of the urban population.

The aircraft was carrying humanitarian cargo from Bor. The two crew members on board suffered injuries. They were treated at a local clinic and are in a stable condition. The accident was followed by a fire that spread to huts adjacent to the airstrip. Three people died on the ground and two others were injured. WFP is deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life.

This appeal follows the release of the WFP-FAO Hunger Hotspots report which warns that South Sudan is a country of highest concern where humanitarian action is essential to prevent starvation and death.WFP currently has no food supplies in South Sudan to preposition for next year’s humanitarian response and needs US$404 million to frontload assistance.

There are 2.8 million children out of school across South Sudan and WFP’s school meals are a vital social safety net that help increase enrolment and attendance at schools, particularly in highly food insecure areas.

Since June 25, nearly 6,000 households have participated in the programme led by WFP. The activities focus on repairing and rebuilding infrastructure such as embankments, roads and access routes that were badly damaged by the cyclone, utilising nature-based solutions like mud rebuilding and planting trees to prevent further erosion, whenever possible.

Almost all of those who have crossed the border since fighting broke out in Sudan in mid-April are South Sudanese and they are returning to a country already facing unprecedented humanitarian needs. A new food security assessment completed by WFP shows that 90 percent of returnee families are experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity.
