Joyce Kanyangwa Luma has been Assistant Executive Director ad interim, Workplace Culture Department since May 2022 and prior to that she was WFP Director of Human Resources. The Workplace Culture Department (WP) leads efforts to create an optimal working environment at WFP.

Joyce Namoe, a programme associate with the World Food Programme in Uganda, joined WFP in 1999. She is passionate about using school feeding as an incentive for parents to keep girls in school. “We’re saving a lot of girls from early marriages, forced marriages,” she says.

We mourn the loss of innocent life everywhere, including those killed on October 7 and during the 11 months of conflict since then. We urgently call for a sustained, immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Highlights WFP re-engages in Dablual, southern Unity. After months of inaccessibility due to fighting, WFP was able to deploy a Rapid Response Team to Dablual. More than 30,000 vulnerable people were reached with much needed food and nutrition assistance. The Rapid Response Mission, which was completed this week, were visited by WFP Country Director, Joyce Luma, on 25 July.

The conflict in South Sudan is still raging and people continue to flee into neighbouring countries. WFP photographer Marco Frattini and I travelled to northwestern Kenya to hear their stories. It took Martha 11 days to make the journey from her home in South Sudan to reach the safety of the Kakuma refugee camps in Kenya, where she can finally share a meal in peace with her seven children.

"I miss school and my friends, I also miss the school breakfast," says 10-year-old Godfrey Chimala.

Poverty, hunger, inadequate school facilities, sexual and gender-based violence — schoolchildren in Malawi face multiple challenges that prevent them from accessing quality education. WFP has been the largest provider of school feeding in Malawi since 1999.
