With a population already struggling with the effects of persistent conflicts, political instability, and the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19, this first-ever climate risk insurance payment in Mali will help WFP provide emergency and resilience-building support in a timely manner to those most vulnerable to climate extremes from March to May 2022.

The contribution will support WFP in providing life-saving food assistance and nutrition support to children with acute malnutrition and the most vulnerable families affected by the most severe drought in 40 years in Huíla and Cunene provinces.

WFP began its programmes in Timor-Leste in 1999, providing emergency food assistance to internally displaced persons during the crisis following the referendum for independence from Indonesia.

In Cunene province, the contribution will help WFP provide nutritious products to prevent and treat acute malnutrition to some 700 children under the age of two and 3, 200 pregnant and breast-feeding women between January and July 2023.

This contribution comes at a critical time when thousands of women, men and children in Mali face catastrophic levels of food insecurity while more than a million will struggle to feed themselves during the June- August lean season.
