“What sets Indigenous food systems apart is that food is not seen as a commodity. It is not something you can buy or sell.

The MoU marks the fifth tranche of food aid India committed to in 2020, and will be shipped through Iran’s Chabahar Port.

With support from the Adaptation Fund’s US$14 million contribution, the project will focus on districts in both countries where adverse weather affects farmers' crops and livelihoods.

Effective for five years, the agreement was signed in New Delhi between Elisabeth Faure, WFP Country Director in India and Manoj Ahuja, Agriculture Secretary, Government of India, in the presence of Honourable Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

In a keynote address at the first edition focusing on the Women in Agriculture Value Chain, H.E. May-Elin Stener, Ambassador of Norway to India, said: “we are very excited by this collaboration with WFP in India on women in agriculture, building on the global partnership between Norway and WFP.

This is one of the many delegations on fortified rice that the Government of India has hosted in partnership with WFP. “This visit provided insights into India’s rice fortification.

A large proportion of Assam’s population depends on agriculture, making it acutely vulnerable to the impact of climate risks. The project will equip smallholder farmers in the state with innovative and climate-adaptive farming techniques and diversification and livelihood expansion strategies.

Asma Khan has long been a dedicated supporter of WFP and its causes. Asma advocated for WFP’s Women are Hungrier campaign, to draw attention to the central role women’s empowerment plays in ending hunger and transforming communities.

This partnership comes as part of a broader EU project, “Protecting most vulnerable populations from the COVID-19 pandemic in Libya”.
