For this reason, today’s statement is a joint one, delivered on behalf of the three UN agencies most involved in food security and nutrition in Nigeria the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), UNICEF, and WFP.

The €1 million contribution is Croatia’s largest ever donation to the UN World Food Programme.

Across the globe in 2024, as many as 309 million people are facing acute levels of food insecurity in the 71 countries with WFP operations.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) continues to face a wide range of food and nutrition security challenges, which add to the protracted humanitarian situation in the country. Agriculture annually falls short of meeting food needs, due to shortages of arable land, lack of access to modern agricultural equipment and fertilizers, and recurrent disasters.

Zimbabwe, a landlocked, low-income, food-deficit country in Southern Africa, is grappling with the effects of El Niño, exacerbating its semi-arid climate’s variable nature. An estimated 6 million people are expected to be food insecure in Zimbabwe during the peak of the 2024-2025 lean season from January to March. 

“It is heart breaking to see families sleeping on the streets without a roof over them. Their houses have been reduced to dust.

WFP is a critical player in supporting refugees and crisis-affected populations in Egypt through three key activities: 1. General Food Assistance (GFA), 2. Nutrition support for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women (PBW), and 3. Self-reliance activities. WFP provides cash transfers to refugees and crisis-affected populations in the form of monthly unrestricted cash.

Both Indonesia and Bangladesh share similarities in their high exposure to multi-hazards like floods, droughts and climate-related disasters like frequent cyclones that wash away entire communities.
