Some 6.3 million people are internally displaced in the country. Of this, approximately 6 million are within the three eastern provinces. The conflict in eastern DRC is an interlinked crisis, affecting food insecurity, malnutrition, health, education, access to clean water and shelter.

Almost all of those who have crossed the border since fighting broke out in Sudan in mid-April are South Sudanese and they are returning to a country already facing unprecedented humanitarian needs. A new food security assessment completed by WFP shows that 90 percent of returnee families are experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity.

The convoy, which moved through the Rafah crossing Saturday brought with it three trucks carrying 60 metric tons of WFP emergency food. The supplies include canned tuna, wheat flour, pasta, canned beans and canned tomato paste. “This food is desperately needed as the conditions inside Gaza are truly catastrophic.

For the past few weeks, entry points into Gaza have been virtually sealed except through the Rafah border crossing point. While there has been a steady increase in aid entering Gaza, it is nowhere near enough to meet the exponentially growing needs.  "Right now, parents in Gaza do not know whether they can feed their children today and whether they will even survive to see tomorrow.

This joint project supports evidence-based land management and environmental preservation. It is implemented in partnership with the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) of the Ministry of Planning. It is generously funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

WFP teams in the two countries are delivering immediate relief in the affected areas and at the same time assessing needs and supporting logistics efforts.

The contribution from Japan will enable WFP provide school feeding and nutrition support to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and host communities.
