On a hot Wednesday afternoon, Atoumata Nimaga smilingly welcomes women – babies tied securely on their backs –arriving at a local health centre in the central Malian village of Dotembougou. Not so long ago, the mother of three, who is in her twenties, faced hunger so severe that it put her then unborn child at risk.

“WFP is extremely concerned about the deteriorating food security in Northern Ethiopia – where many are already facing severe hunger. Our teams are working at pace to deliver food to them urgently,” says Chris Nikoi, WFP Ethiopia’s Country Director (ai).

With this crucial funding, WFP will provide cash assistance to 65,000 food-insecure refugees, as well as specialized nutritious food to 4,000 malnourished children under 5 and 350 pregnant and breastfeeding women suffering from moderate acute malnutrition. “The situation is desperate and quickly deteriorating. WFP is currently reaching some 2.5 million people. We have the capacity to scale up and expand our assistance, but for that we need all parties to facilitate access – both across the warring front lines, as well as cross-border from Chad and South Sudan,” said WFP’s Deputy Executive Director, Carl Skau following a mission to Sudan this week.

“This wheat production project to the tune of USD 75 million financed by the African Development Bank became the heart of production in the critical moment in Sudan. It provided food security, yielding 645,000 metric tonnes of wheat this year, and also became a critical crisis response intervention to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

“We are actively preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Beryl. In this type of emergency, preparedness is key and every minute counts.

With this contribution, WFP will provide daily hot and nutritious meals made from Japanese rice along with fresh vegetables that will be locally procured from smallholder farmers.

WFP is supporting around 12,500 refugees in Syunik, Gegharkunik, Lori, Shirak, and Ararat through cash assistance at the value of US$108 per person over three months.
