The devastating storm brought life-threatening winds, heavy rain and severe storm surges, upending lives and livelihoods. It left thousands of people homeless, uprooting trees, downing power lines, littering roads with debris and cutting off water supply in several island states in the Caribbean.

WFP depends on river transport to reach rural and remote communities during the rainy season, when roads become inaccessible. However, due to a deterioration in the security situation along the White Nile, WFP has had to suspend its barge movement between Adok and Malakal as the waterways have become inaccessible, to the detriment of communities in the firing line.

WFP continues to deliver emergency food assistance in Haiti alongside programmes that help tackle root causes of hunger. However, the recent uptick in violence has prevented WFP from reaching more than 370,000 of most food insecure Haitians since early February.
The funding will enable WFP to purchase 985 MT of maize and 245 MT of yellow split peas and benefit 42,000 school children for one year in Bubanza, Bujumbura, and Cibitoke Provinces of the country.
