In Chad, the Executive Director witnessed firsthand how conflict, climate shocks, and high food and fuel costs are pushing millions into acute hunger and malnutrition.  Chad hosts the largest refugee population of any country in West and Central Africa and is also gripped by its own rising food insecurity. “The global community faces a decision point,” said McCain.

Japan’s timely contribution, totalling 1,304 metric tonnes of cereals, pulses, and vegetable oil, will support food-insecure communities during the upcoming 2024/25 lean season—from October this year to March next year—ensuring the most vulnerable families receive essential assistance in time. This contribution is particularly crucial in a context where millions of families are struggling to meet their basic food and nutrition needs due to the compounding effects of the climate crisis, conflicts and insecurity, and the high costs of food and fuel in West Africa which drive food out of reach for vulnerable families.

The number of refugees in Uganda has almost tripled in the past ten years from over 600,000 in 2014 to 1.7 million in 2024.

Their call comes ahead of the COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace which will seek transformative measures on the frontlines of the climate crisis and will be officially launched on 3 December at COP28.    The Global Stocktake, the first report card on the Paris Agreement, has shown that the world is coming dangerously close to permanently passing the critical 1.5°

The perfect climate for hunger.

Driven by intense monsoon rains since late June, severe flooding has impacted over 200,000 people in Myanmar, with many temporarily displaced.

The Beryl Cash Assistance Programme targets 11,500 people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Beryl in early July. The programme will provide relief and support to families in their recovery, ensuring access to food, water and other essential needs.

The Asia-Pacific region is the most vulnerable to climate-related shocks. This Seasonal Monitor provides a critical climate overview for WFP’s country offices in this region, with the aim of strengthening understanding, preparedness, and responses to these shocks. The reports cover the rainfall performance, vegetation and crop conditions, and climate outlook for distinct geographic zones.

Some 345 million people are currently facing high levels of food insecurity, according to WFP analysis, an increase of almost 200 million since early 2020. Of these, 43 million are just one step away from famine. Meanwhile, WFP has recently been forced to cut food rations in operations in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Palestine as needs outpace available funding.
