Timor-Leste is facing high acute food insecurity due to inflated food costs, reduced purchasing  power and the persistent impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and successive climate shocks. Every day households are finding it increasingly difficult to afford nutritious meals.

WFP’s refugee operation has faced severe resourcing constraints in 2021 and WFP was forced to reduce general food assistance rations to 40 percent of a full ration in March and April 2021.

Desperately needed rains across the Horn of Africa have so far failed to materialize, almost a month into the current rainy season, and if these conditions continue, along with stagnant and even decreasing humanitarian aid, the number of hungry people due to drought could spiral from the currently estimated 14 million to 20 million through 2022

With COVID-19 containment measures limiting people’s movement, WFP has introduced measures to ensure that beneficiaries receive their entitlements in as safe a way as possible.

The Gambia faces high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly among women, young people and children. This is driven by multiple and diverse factors. Agriculture contributes 25 percent of the country’s GDP, employs 70 percent of the population and is the source of livelihoods for 80 percent of rural inhabitants.

“If we want to break out of the never-ending cycle of crisis and response, we need to address the root causes of hunger by multi-year, long-term projects that shield communities from the impacts of the climate crisis,” said Volli Carucci, WFP’s Head of Resilience and Food Systems. Reducing humanitarian need is just as important as responding to humanitarian emergencies, noted Carucci.

The purpose of this Compendium is to enhance the quality and credibility of Country Office (CO) evidence generation activities and corporate reporting, through the establishment of clear methodologies that describe how to collect, interpret, calculate and report on indicators herein.
