Bringing heavy rains, violent winds and storm surges, Intense Tropical Cyclone Batsirai made landfall on the central-eastern coast of Madagascar on Saturday. Storms during the agricultural season (that runs from October-April) have the potential to wipe out harvest, send food prices soaring and increase food insecurity.

The special funding was welcomed by WFP for its operations in DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zimbabwe.  “The number of severely hungry people in countries across Eastern and Southern Africa hit new peaks in 2022, and we continue to face an unprecedented global food crisis today,” said WFP Executive Director David Beasley.

Norway’s timely contribution will support WFP’s El Niño Response Plan which, in coordination with the Government of Malawi, aims to assist 2.1 million food-insecure people in Malawi. WFP will procure and distribute 3,200 metric tons of maize and ninety-eight metric tons of fortified corn soya blend for the treatment of moderate acute malnutrition.

Over the past year, WFP’s engineers and partners have been conducting disaster risk reduction activities for cyclone and monsoon preparedness and have steadily improved camp conditions and humanitarian access.
