“Supplies of food and water are practically non-existent in Gaza and only a fraction of what is needed is arriving through the borders. With winter fast approaching, unsafe and overcrowded shelters, and the lack of clean water, civilians are facing the immediate possibility of starvation," said WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.

The funds will support up to 327,000 displaced Iraqis and Syrian refugees living in camps, with lifesaving assistance in the form of cash distributions and food baskets. “With the unprecedented levels of global food-insecurity we see today, WFP’s efforts to fight hunger are more crucial than ever,” said Jonas Lovén, Sweden’s ambassador to Iraq.

Food insecurity has reached a 10-year high in West and Central Africa with over 47 million women, men and children unable to meet their basic food and nutrition needs between June and September 2023. In conflict-affected areas of Burkina Faso and Mali over 45,000 faced catastrophic hunger - one step away from famine - during the June-August lean season.
