From January to September 2020, WFP reached 6.7 million food insecure girls, boys, women and men across the country with food assistance. This included 4.5 million seasonally food insecure people, more than 290,000 people affected by the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 more than 200,00 returnees and refugees.

Some 5.7 million people have been displaced internally in the DRC (the highest in Africa). Of these, some 1.5 million people were displaced in 2022 alone.

WFP signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the College of Agriculture – University of Basra focusing on creating opportunities for new graduates through capacity strengthening and training sessions for youth, with an aim to improve people’s food security.

“The thought that people in Iraq in these times still suffer from food insecurity is unbearable to me,” said German Ambassador to the Republic of Iraq Martin Jäger. “Germany is committed to helping Iraqi people build economic resilience given that this is the basis for growth and stability.

The expanded assistance provided by WFP and its humanitarian partners to flood-affected families will include food relief, malnutrition prevention and livelihoods support. WFP will also give logistics support for the response.
