Most districts in the South are in the grip of a nutrition emergency with Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) in children under five almost doubling over the last four months, touching an alarming 16.5 percent, as per a recent assessment conducted by the Ministry of Health. Worst affected is the district of Ambovombe where GAM has crossed 27 percent, putting the lives of many children at risk.

The donation will ensure the provision of specialised nutritious foods to more than 39,000 children under five years in hard-hit districts and fund the setting up of vegetable gardens to encourage better, more diversified diets.

Soaring food prices and transport costs, disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts across the globe including the war in Ukraine, and the rise of climate-related disasters such as floods and drought are driving an increase in food and nutrition insecurity.

With this contribution, WFP will reach 38,000 vulnerable new refugees, returnees, and internally displaced persons with much needed emergency assistance. Starting in June, another 46,000 from the local communities in Chad will be supported during the lean season, a period when food stocks of the previous harvest are running low and the new crop has yet to be harvested.
