WFP teams in the two countries are delivering immediate relief in the affected areas and at the same time assessing needs and supporting logistics efforts.

The number of hungry people in Central America has nearly quadrupled over two years. Devastating hurricanes compounded economic shocks caused by COVID-19 leaving millions without an income and many planning to migrate. Agricultural and coastal communities in the Dry Corridor have borne the brunt of a years-long climate emergency that was exacerbated by hurricanes Eta and Iota last year.

In Cameroon, where conflict and displacement have led to a significant deterioration in food security, WFP will use a contribution of USD $1.4 million (JPY 200 million, 840 million XAF) to implement a two-year project, lasting until September 2025.

With this funding, WFP in collaboration with the Government of Mali, will implement two multi-year projects targeting families and communities severely affected by persistent conflicts, climatic shocks and rising food prices in Bandiagara, Douentza, Gao, Gourma-Rharous, Koulikoro, Mopti, San, Segou and Timbuktu.  Communities in Central Mali will receive conditional food and nutritional ass

Before the storm hit, WFP had already started providing hot meals to evacuees in shelters in Manakara. Food prepositioned by WFP in Manakara and Tamatave, ahead of the cyclone, has started reaching affected communities, with additional stocks making their way to the areas worst hit.
