Social protection plays a vital role in the pursuit of a world with Zero Hunger. This strategy explains how WFP will contribute to the development of high quality national social protection systems and programmes in contexts of food insecurity, as a complement to WFP’s work in emergency response.

With funding from the Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme and CACC – respectively US$1.79 million and US$1.1 million, the project aims to enhance the resilience and livelihoods of smallholder farmers through organic agriculture and access to markets.

In Myanmar, the Republic of Korea funds will help WFP respond to the needs of communities in conflict-affected Rakhine State, where WFP currently supports 320,000 people, including many Rohingya, with monthly life-saving food assistance.

In 2020, WFP and UNAIDS piloted a joint initiative to mitigate the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 on marginalized populations often left behind by providing cash transfers to vulnerable people living with HIV, key populations and their households in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Niger.

The decision was taken after negotiations stalled on an agreement to introduce controls to prevent the diversion of food away from some of the most vulnerable people in Yemen. The first stage of the suspension – effective in Sana’a city only – affects some 850,000 people.  Elsewhere in Yemen, WFP’s food assistance programmes are continuing as normal.

DRC’s conflict-driven hunger crisis is worsening as violence in the eastern province’s surges, forcing families to flee once again. More and more people are arriving at overcrowded camps where there is a lack of food, sanitation and shelter.

WFP is concerned about the safety of tens of thousands of people who have become displaced due to the violence in northeast Syria. Since 9 October, large numbers of people have fled the towns of Ras al-Ayn in Hasakeh and Tell Abyad in Raqqa, though some have since returned to their places of origin.

DHAKA – The World Food Programme is working together with the Government of Bangladesh to assist more than 275,000 people affected by flooding in the north-west of the country, activating for the first time an innovative forecast-based financing project.
