With much of the world’s commercial transport systems, particularly airlines, grounded by COVID-19, WFP - the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger and a global leader in logistics – has stepped in to move passengers and huge volumes of health and other supplies needed in the fight against the global pandemic.

Millions of people in Central America urgently need food assistance in the wake of Hurricane Eta, one of the worst storms in decades, as fears grow of another storm brewing in the coming days.

The LoU aims to bolster the capacity to respond to emergencies and effectively foster investment in agricultural entrepreneurship.

“We came to Zambia because we were afraid of dying,” says Mulumbwa, 25. “People were being killed and beheaded. By the time we arrived, we were exhausted. My children were very unwell and had lost a lot of weight.” In 2017, Mulumbwa, her husband and their two children left all they had in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to seek refuge in Zambia.

The improvement in food security stems from better food consumption, which could be attributed to reduced food prices and improved incomes among farming communities during the harvesting period when the mission was carried out. Despite this positive trend, food insecurity remains high in certain districts, especially Kilinochchi, Nuwara Eliya, Mannar, Batticaloa, Vavuniya, and Jaffna.

As schools in Venezuela are currently closed, WFP will provide take-home rations that include rice, lentils, salt and vegetable oil, prioritizing school children under the age of six in areas most affected by food insecurity.

The project, expected to benefit over 12,000 farmer households in nearly 540 villages, will support smallholder agriculture value chains in four of the country’s most vulnerable districts - Zhemgang, Tsirang, Trongsa, and Sarpang – which also hold a strong potential for commercial farming.

During the visit, he will discuss how food security and nutrition can be addressed through shared investments in agriculture and water management, nutrition-sensitive value chains and human capital development. He will meet with the country’s top food security and nutrition advocates, including the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste H.E. Jose Ramos Horta and Vice Prime Minister, H.E. Mr.

The first cross-border movement took place on 16 June carrying 50 metric tons of essential food assistance from Egypt to Sudan. The assistance will help to alleviate the suffering of thousands of people who have become highly vulnerable due to the conflict. The establishment of the humanitarian corridor is led by WFP, in partnership with Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

WFP used the funds to purchase 5,076 tons of wheat flour from Russia.
