The situation is particularly worrying in conflict-affected areas of the Lake Chad Basin and the Liptako-Gourma region (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger), where 25,500 people will experience catastrophic hunger (phase 5) during the June-August 2023 lean season.

While the food assistance has been designed to meet the minimum recommended 2,100 kilocalories, chronic funding shortfalls have forced WFP to provide reduced rations since 2020. Earlier this year (March), further reductions were made, dropping the ration from meeting 80 percent of the food needs to 65 percent.

“UNHAS is more than an air service; it is a lifeline,” says Pasqualina Di Sirio, WFP’s Country Director in Madagascar. “We need funding urgently to keep this critical service running.

“This latest support from the UK is helping WFP to reach more than two million food-insecure people across Afghanistan through the harsh winter,” said UK Minister of State for Middle East, South Asia and the UN Lord (Tariq) Ahmad.

“This is a race against time – I am worried we might not be able to keep up,” says Shelley Thakral, the World Food Programme’s communications chief in Afghanistan, on a video call from Herat. “We do not have enough funds and we are asking for US$2.6 billion to scale up as we must in 2022 – that’s about 30 cents of a US dollar per person we need to reach per day.

This generous contribution from the German Federal Foreign Office, €4 million for 2020 and another €5 million for 2021, has enabled WFP to avert disruptions in its food assistance to approximately 340,000 non-refugee Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, most of them women and children.

The UN food agency is scaling up to provide life-saving food and nutrition assistance to an additional 5 million people by the end of this year, doubling the number of people WFP had planned to support at the start of 2024.
