The National Poverty Targeting Programme (NPTP) is Lebanon’s first national social safety net, established in 2011 and implemented by the Ministry of Social Affairs. The Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN), a US$246 million project funded through a World Bank loan, was launched in 2021 to expand safety net coverage amidst increased poverty.

A record number of people – 6.9 million, or more than 60 percent of South Sudan’s entire population – do not know where their next meal will come from.

A total of 900 metric tonnes of rice will be distributed to 100,000 people (18,000 families) in 16 districts of Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, Sekong and Salavanh Provinces. “The food inflation rate has experienced a significant surge recently, with a 47 percent increase, the highest level since March 2000.

With the markets inside Gaza now all but collapsed, many are now going days without eating, meaning WFP and partners on the ground are seeing an increasing risk of starvation.

Through this contribution WFP will reach up to 150,000 people entering Egypt at the borders with ready- to-eat food packages over a period of three months.

“We’re providing mainly hot meals, ready-to-eat food rations and family food packages -- things that require no cooking facilities and can be consumed immediately,” said WFP Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Corinne Fleischer.

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the United Nations World Food Programme is recognition of the important link between conflict and hunger and the critical role that food assistance plays in supporting the first step towards peace and stability.

The project will introduce tested solutions to combat desertification and support water conservation in the farming sector.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) snapshot – released today – projects that over the coming months 1.95 million people in Gaza (91 percent of the population) will face acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or worse).

WFP’s assistance will be suspended for 1.2 million Sudanese refugees and crisis-affected people in April due to funding shortfalls, including for new Sudanese refugees. Also at risk is the vital cross-border life-line supply route into Darfur – the only reliable route into embattled western Sudan.
