A small white UNHAS Dash 8 airplane taxis down the rough tarmac of tiny Beni airport in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) North Kivu province, raising a cloud of dust on a sunny morning – along with hopes for this conflict-torn region. This is not just a routine flight. It is a lifeline.

On a hot Wednesday afternoon, Atoumata Nimaga smilingly welcomes women – babies tied securely on their backs –arriving at a local health centre in the central Malian village of Dotembougou. Not so long ago, the mother of three, who is in her twenties, faced hunger so severe that it put her then unborn child at risk.

Between June and August 2022, the World Food Programme completed the evaluation and conducted a total of 7,097 household and travel group surveys, ensuring representative samples for five population groups: i) Venezuelan migrants with a vocation for permanence, ii) migrants Venezuelans in transit, iii) commuting Venezuelan migrants, iv) Colombian returnees and v) host communities.

Systems and structures of management

This figure represents a four-million increase in the number of people who are food-insecure compared to the November 2023 forecast and highlights a fourfold increase over the last five years. The situation is particularly worrying in conflict-affected northern Mali, where an estimated 2,600 people are likely to experience catastrophic hunger (IPC/CH phase 5).

The evaluation aimed to assess the implementation of the Joint Programme and generate lessons for future initiatives. It focused on relevance, effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability, and covered activities by all participating organizations and partners.
