“This wheat production project to the tune of USD 75 million financed by the African Development Bank became the heart of production in the critical moment in Sudan. It provided food security, yielding 645,000 metric tonnes of wheat this year, and also became a critical crisis response intervention to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The World Food Programme (WFP) is calling for urgent funds to respond to the growing crisis in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).  More than a million people have been forced to leave their homes in eastern DRC since January, bringing to 5.5 million the total number of internally displaced people (IDP) in the region.

Carl Skau is WFP’s Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he leads the organization’s overall coordination, strategic direction, humanitarian diplomacy, and support for field operations. He also supports corporate efforts to maximize WFP’s inter-agency collaboration and partnerships.

The trend is particularly worrying in coastal countries, where the number of women, men, and children facing acute hunger (IPC/CH phases 3 or higher) is expected to reach 6.2 million during the June-August 2024 hunger gap - a 16 percent increase on last year.

The handover ceremony was attended by WFP Representative and Country Director in Tajikistan Adham Musallam, Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan Igor Lyakin-Frolov and Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Tajikistan Sobirzoda Nurali Mirali. The food assistance was purchased with funds from the Russian Federation, which allocated US$5 million to improve food security in Tajikistan in 2021

As schools re-open, school health and nutrition programmes are more important than ever because they help stop children going hungry, ensure they get nutritious food,  provide powerful incentives for parents to re-enrol children in school, and increase retention rates, especially among girls.

In Myanmar, the Republic of Korea funds will help WFP respond to the needs of communities in conflict-affected Rakhine State, where WFP currently supports 320,000 people, including many Rohingya, with monthly life-saving food assistance.

Almost half of Afghanistan’s population – 19.7 million people – are facing acute hunger according to the global standard for food insecurity, the IPC or Integrated Food Phase Classification.
