South Sudan is facing the highest levels of food insecurity since the country declared independence ten years ago. A hunger crisis looms where 60 percent (7.24 million) of its population is increasingly hungry due to chronic sporadic violence, extreme weather patterns and the economic impact of COVID-19. The future of South Sudan depends on real peace and stability.

Most families crossing the border are arriving hungry, desperate and in need of immediate support. WFP continues to supply all arriving families with fortified biscuits and cash to buy food or other basic necessities.

“WFP remains the last lifeline for millions of Afghans struggling to make a living in an economy rife with unemployment and uncertainty; Afghans are seeing their savings shrink as they exhaust their last resources,” said Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP Afghanistan Country Director.

It’s been four months since Letemariam Lakaw gave birth to her baby boy on the floor of their room in Hitsats, a former refugee camp in Ethiopia’s Tigray region that now houses tens of thousands of families displaced by conflict.  “There were days where we didn’t eat any food the whole day and night.

“This incredibly timely contribution will help us provide much-needed support for both Ukrainian refugees and Moldovan host communities,“ said WFP Representative in Moldova Katrien Ghoos.

The evaluation was commissioned to assess (a) whether targeted beneficiaries received services as expected and (b) if the project met its stated goals and objectives in line with the results frameworks and assumptions, and in contrast to the baseline and mid-term findings.

“WFP is extremely concerned about the deteriorating food security in Northern Ethiopia – where many are already facing severe hunger. Our teams are working at pace to deliver food to them urgently,” says Chris Nikoi, WFP Ethiopia’s Country Director (ai).

The government preliminary data on the storm’s impact in Inhambane, Sofala, Gaza and Maputo provinces, indicate that more than 48,000 people have been affected and over 23,000 students and teachers are unable to attend classes. More than 10,000 houses have been partially or completely destroyed.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is stockpiling 310 metric tons of food at the Gaza border ready for dispatch to people in desperate need – as soon as humanitarian access is granted.   WFP’s supplies in Al Arish, Egypt, could feed 244,000 people for a week if unhindered access and safe passage were provided to our teams on the ground.
