The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is on the ground responding to the devastating impact of the two earthquakes that hit Türkiye and Syria on Monday 6 February. WFP has been delivering food assistance since Tuesday with plans to reach half a million people in the two countries.

From January to September 2020, WFP reached 6.7 million food insecure girls, boys, women and men across the country with food assistance. This included 4.5 million seasonally food insecure people, more than 290,000 people affected by the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 more than 200,00 returnees and refugees.

Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province is in the grips of a spiraling crisis as thousands of people flee their homes amidst violence, warns the United Nations World Food Programme. Recent attacks in Palma have affected 50,000 people. Many have fled Palma to Pemba on boats making their perilous journey over choppy waters.

As part of the agreement, WFP will work with the provincial Government of Balochistan to translate plans into actions aligned with Government priorities. Further, WFP will harness its expertise to provide technical assistance to relevant departments while actively mobilizing resources as required. According to Chris Kaye, WFP Pakistan has adopted a clear direction under its new CSP.

In Niger, over 3.3 million women, men, and children (13 per cent of the total population) are severely food insecure. Maternal mortality rates are high, with 1 in 226 pregnant women dying from pregnancy-related causes.

“Without additional fuel supplies, bakeries working with WFP will no longer be able to produce bread. Only two of our contracted bakeries have fuel to produce bread at the moment and tomorrow there might be none,” said WFP Representative in Palestine Samer Abdeljaber.
