The U.S. support is helping ensure that people can meet basic food and nutrition needs during and in the aftermath of crises – including post-conflict and through the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Maghrabah, a remote district in Hajjah governorate in northern Yemen, families are resorting to eating the waxy leaves of a local tree to survive, boiling them to soften them into a bitter-tasting paste that is slightly more digestible. This is also described as 'famine food' - a last resort for people who do not have access to nutritious food to sustain themselves.

“I built this house with my own hands as I used to work as a builder, but it was partially destroyed during the [armed] escalation,” says Ahmad, as he recalls the hostilities in Gaza in May. ”I was shocked and didn’t know what to do with a big family like mine.” Ahmad and his wife Taghreed have four children.

“The recent conflict has caused significant destruction and increased the suffering of Gaza’s population that has already been grappling with hefty challenges with little prospect for breakthrough,” said WFP Representative and Country Director Samer AbdelJaber.

Approximately US$ 2 million from the Korean government's donation is for food and cash assistance, logistics support for the recent UN Flash appeal for Ukraine, and US$ 1 million is for WFP’s aid to refugees from Ukraine in Moldova. This is the second contribution from Korea since the Ukraine crisis.
