Zenebech Kahsay is relieved to watch her children play once again, their energy renewed at last by bread she’s baked after receiving a 15kg bag of wheat from the World Food Programme (WFP) at a food distribution in Tahtay Adyabo, in Ethiopia’s northern province of Tigray. “My children were dizzy with hunger,” explains Kahsay as she grinds dark brown grains of wheat with a pestle and mortar.

WFP’s augmented response will target hard-to-reach areas like Menaka, where the number of people forced to flee their homes continues to rise - with hunger reaching catastrophic levels due to the combined effects of climate extremes and inter-communal violence. “Food insecurity has already reached alarming levels in Menaka.

“Without additional fuel supplies, bakeries working with WFP will no longer be able to produce bread. Only two of our contracted bakeries have fuel to produce bread at the moment and tomorrow there might be none,” said WFP Representative in Palestine Samer Abdeljaber.

This policy brief is the result of a long-term collaboration between WFP, Oxford University and Cape Town University to generate evidence underscoring the critical role of food security in a global AIDS response.

As schools re-open, school health and nutrition programmes are more important than ever because they help stop children going hungry, ensure they get nutritious food,  provide powerful incentives for parents to re-enrol children in school, and increase retention rates, especially among girls.

“Namibia has abundant potential to secure its food and can build a concrete and sustainable food system, but it needs support from all stakeholders and actors within the food value chain says, George Fedha, WFP’s Country Director in Namibia.

The event underscored the unparalleled commitment of the Pakistani Government to prevent malnutrition and stunting. It also celebrated the successes of the programme to date. BNP remains the largest government-funded programme in WFP’s global history.
