USAID will work through the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide immediate food assistance to approximately 133,000 individuals affected by the cyclone in Chimanimani and Chipinge districts. The contribution includes more than 2,000 metric tons of U.S. in-kind sorghum, vegetable oil, and fortified cereals that were prepositioned from USAID’s warehouse in Durban, South Africa. U.S.

In these countries, WFP is bringing together investments in infrastructure, insurance and financial inclusion for farmers -particularly women-, connecting their produce to value-added food markets, anticipating extreme weather events and informing them in real time of changing seasonal patterns.

“There is only one way to describe what I saw today: apocalyptic. Entire neighborhoods have been flattened; homes destroyed, schools and shops closed; lives torn apart. The scale of devastation here is truly incomprehensible,” said Beasley. The Executive Director visited Antakya, which suffered significant loss of life and massive destruction.

Seventy-four (74) percent of both Internally Displaced Population (IDPs) and host population households in Gujba and Gulani Local Government Areas (LGAs) are food insecure. One-third of IDP households is severely food insecure. Malnutrition rates among children under five years exceed the WHO emergency thresholds, with prevalence higher than 15 percent.

On 20 May Cyclone Amphan made landfall in Bangladesh heavily impacting 19 districts with more than 2.4 million people and 500,000 livestock evacuated to 15,000 cyclone shelters by the Government of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is facing a growing number of COVID-19 cases and the impact threatens to reverse development gains made over the past five decades.

The evaluation was commissioned to provide a situational analysis before the program begins, to establish baseline values for all performance indicators and review targets, to validate program design assumptions, and to provide program implementation suggestions for the five-year program. It was intended for both accountability and learning purposes.

Thanks to a US$ 2.4 million contribution from USAID, WFP plans to distribute a total of 500 tonnes of rice rations to some 10,000 households (50,000 people) in the coming days. Each household will receive 50kgs of rice to help them with their basic food needs. The first batch of rice was distributed yesterday in Dinagat. WFP is working with local partners CARE Philippines and ACCORD Inc.
