In Bangladesh, WFP provides food assistance to the entire population of 860,000 Rohingya people living in the camps in the Cox’s Bazar district.

The situation is particularly worrying in conflict-affected areas of the Lake Chad Basin and the Liptako-Gourma region (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger), where 25,500 people will experience catastrophic hunger (phase 5) during the June-August 2023 lean season.

For three decades, John Mabior lived in fear of the next attack, looting or killing. His community of Malual Mok, in South Sudan’s midwestern Tonj South, had always been at war with its neighbours across the river – the Thony community .

“Conflict, displacement and disease have taken a devastating toll on the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, pushing millions into hunger and desperation. But WFP’s food assistance is providing a lifeline to many of these people, preventing them from being overwhelmed by starvation and famine,” said Beasley. “We urgently need more funding to continue this vital work.

The contribution, which was received through the European Union’s Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), has allowed WFP to provide life-saving assistance to people in eastern DRC, where intensifying violence is worsening food insecurity and decimating people’s livelihoods. WFP and partners have so far delivered food to some 43,000 displaced people in Sake, Minova and Rutshuru, towns close to Goma that have seen an influx of people fleeing their homes.  Thousands of displaced people remain scattered across the region amid warnings of further eruptions.

The latest contribution makes USAID WFP’s most vital donor in 2020, supporting up to 280,000 displaced Iraqis and 76,000 Syrian refugees through cash and voucher assistance that meets their immediate food needs.

In 2014, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) assisted more than five million of the most vulnerable and food-insecure people in Ethiopia.

The take-home food distributions began on July 6 and will run through the month, covering more than 300 schools in all Karamoja’s nine districts.
