School feeding first started in Laos in 2002, with a pilot programme by the Ministry of Education and Sports and WFP, in which 30,000 primary school children in Phongsaly, Oudomxay and Luangnamtha provinces were provided with mid-morning snacks. Starting from the 2016-2017 school year, more nutritious cooked meals replaced the mid-morning snacks.

“The work of the UN Food and Agriculture Agencies is essential to address food insecurity in Lao PDR,” said Ambassador McCain. “Together with the Lao Government, the three agencies work to reduce hunger, improve learning and nutrition outcomes for primary school students, strengthen livelihoods of small-holder farmers, and bolster resilience of the country’s food systems.

The funding will help WFP to provide much needed food assistance to Sahrawi refugees in Tindouf (Algeria) and vulnerable people in Mali, Mauritania, North-East Nigeria and Palestine who suffer the consequences of conflict.

In rural areas of Myanmar, less than half of all children complete primary school. High dropout rates in primary school remain a serious concern, especially in remote areas. In 1996, WFP launched school feeding in northern Rakhine, which has some of the lowest education and food security indicators in Myanmar.
