In South Sudan, over half the population, nearly 6.5 million people are expected to need food assistance as the country struggles for a fragile peace process and the challenges of climate change.

“WFP is extremely grateful to the World Bank for this generous contribution, at a crucial time in Sudan when more and more people do not know where their next meal will come from,” said Eddie Rowe, WFP’s Representative and Country Director in Sudan.  This is the first-ever direct contribution from the World Bank to WFP in Sudan.

Almost all of those who have crossed the border since fighting broke out in Sudan in mid-April are South Sudanese and they are returning to a country already facing unprecedented humanitarian needs. A new food security assessment completed by WFP shows that 90 percent of returnee families are experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity.

Persistent insecurity, the climate crisis, and high food and fuel prices have exacerbated food insecurity in Chad, which hosts 592,800 refugees, more than any other country in West and Central Africa.

This synthesis report presents an updated analysis of the social protection landscape in Asia and the Pacific and identifies priorities for enhancing both food security and nutrition and improving responses to risks and shocks.

The brief uses key indicators to describe how the global food and economic crisis affects Kyrgyzstan’s food system, highlighting its current resilience and potential opportunities for building further resilience.

The funding will help more than 35,000 children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers impacted by conflict, economic shocks, and climate events.
