Energy is vital within humanitarian settings and in vulnerable areas to enable improved livelihoods, preventing shocks and building resilience. It is also a necessary condition for development and underpins the achievement of two-thirds of the SDFs.

A mountainous, landlocked country, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Asia.  Its predominantly rural, 7.5 million strong population lives in over 10,000 villages – most of which have but a few hundred inhabitants – in remote, ethnically diverse areas.

The Stampriet project, supported by the Government of Namibia and Republic of Brazil, has yielded remarkable outcomes since its establishment. The school now produces approximately 5 000 chicken eggs monthly, a variety of nutritious vegetables and fully funds the salaries of two gardeners from the sale of fresh produce and poultry products.

Green shoots of promise are pushing up from the conflict-scarred earth of Darfur, in western Sudan. Literally.  Primary schools are growing potatoes. tomatoes and spinach on government-allocated land.

The first cross-border movement took place on 16 June carrying 50 metric tons of essential food assistance from Egypt to Sudan. The assistance will help to alleviate the suffering of thousands of people who have become highly vulnerable due to the conflict.
