South Sudan is bracing itself for a crisis.

2023 was the hottest year ever recorded. A natural El Niño cycle added to the rising trend of global warming, resulting in more frequent and intense droughts, floods, and tropical cyclones. To mitigate these risks, WFP activated Anticipatory Actions (AAs) in countries where the impact of El Niño was predicted to be especially severe, as well as in other countries worldwide.

The OPEC Fund Director-General Abdulhamid Alkhalifa met with WFP on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai and expressed the OPEC Fund’s support in combating global food insecurity and hunger.
