2023 was the hottest year ever recorded. A natural El Niño cycle added to the rising trend of global warming, resulting in more frequent and intense droughts, floods, and tropical cyclones. To mitigate these risks, WFP activated Anticipatory Actions (AAs) in countries where the impact of El Niño was predicted to be especially severe, as well as in other countries worldwide.

The number of people WFP will target as part of the programme could expand to 12 million people if adequate funding allows. But dwindling resources  available for humanitarian operations means that despite near-record level needs, WFP has been forced to assist less people than originally planned.

Once completed, the facility will increase and improve the flow of humanitarian food from Termez, Uzbekistan to Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan. The project is supported by the Government of Uzbekistan, the local authorities, and the Termez Cargo Centre.  “We are happy that the United Nations is expanding their warehouse capacity here in Termez,” said Irgashev.

To date, WFP has delivered more than 235,000 food rations to people affected by the destruction of the dam across Khersonska and Mykolaivska oblasts.
