In the heart of her village in Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh, Husan once lived in a sturdy two-room house, with her sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Then, a year and a half ago, one of the biggest floods to ever hit the country in recent years turned everything upside down.

The contribution, received last September, supported the provision of food assistance to 53,110 Syrian refugees, nearly half the population living in Zaatari and Azraq camps during the months of October, November and December 2022.

Systems and structures of management

At the request of the government, a joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) visited the country from 14 November to 2 December 2022 to estimate the 2022 crop production, to forecast the country’s import requirements for 2023 and to estimate the number of food insecure people.

2022 was marked by the war in Ukraine and its impact on the heavily import-dependent MENA region. Conflict, displacement, refugees and massive food price inflation resulted in increased hunger across the region.

The updated WFP evaluation policy is introduced at a time when WFP’s strategic plan for 2022–2025 has made clear the organization’s  commitment to becoming evidence-driven in delivering its results.
