Rome—The UN World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the COP28 and COP29 presidencies have today called for an urgent scaling up of climate action and financing for adapted and resilient agrifood systems in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

In Chad, the Executive Director witnessed firsthand how conflict, climate shocks, and high food and fuel costs are pushing millions into acute hunger and malnutrition. Chad hosts the largest refugee population of any country in West and Central Africa and is also gripped by its own rising food insecurity.
“The global community faces a decision point,” said McCain.
WFP continues to deliver emergency food assistance in Haiti alongside programmes that help tackle root causes of hunger. However, the recent uptick in violence has prevented WFP from reaching more than 370,000 of most food insecure Haitians since early February.

The funding will enable WFP to purchase 985 MT of maize and 245 MT of yellow split peas and benefit 42,000 school children for one year in Bubanza, Bujumbura, and Cibitoke Provinces of the country.
