Breaking: WFP Sudan latest In the eastern city of Port Sudan, where tens of thousands of war-displaced seek shelter, frail infants with stick-thin arms chalk up dangerously high malnutrition levels. Hungry people pack schools and other makeshift housing centres, clinging to scant belongings from their old lives.

Partnering to complement efforts

Led by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the two-day high-level conference is entitled, “Investing in homegrown school meals to strengthen human capital, women's economic empowerment and contribute to economic development”.

The visit underscores substantial investments in the country from the Governments of France and Germany and their ongoing partnership with the Government of Lao PDR and WFP, particularly focusing on women's empowerment amid deteriorating food security conditions.

The analysis is intended to raise awareness of the potential to shape future outcomes in this complex multi-faceted and interrelated systems and argues that the World Food Programme (WFP) can play a major role as a direct stakeholder and enabler of partnerships in the region.

The contribution was used until February 2023 to purchase food commodities, including fortified wheat flour and vegetable oil and pulses, for 68,000 schoolchildren and their families in Tajikistan.

Since then, interventions incrementally scaled up and reached almost 3 million people in over 2,750 villages. The results achieved so far are a testimony that the region can move beyond the crises and pave the way towards building truly resilient societies with stronger local food systems.
