South Sudan is facing the highest levels of food insecurity since the country declared independence ten years ago. A hunger crisis looms where 60 percent (7.24 million) of its population is increasingly hungry due to chronic sporadic violence, extreme weather patterns and the economic impact of COVID-19. The future of South Sudan depends on real peace and stability.

The visit underscores substantial investments in the country from the Governments of France and Germany and their ongoing partnership with the Government of Lao PDR and WFP, particularly focusing on women's empowerment amid deteriorating food security conditions.

“This wheat production project to the tune of USD 75 million financed by the African Development Bank became the heart of production in the critical moment in Sudan. It provided food security, yielding 645,000 metric tonnes of wheat this year, and also became a critical crisis response intervention to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

They arrive in Chad by the thousands, the vast majority women and children crossing a desolate wind-swept border from Sudan. Some come on rickety carts and vehicles piled high with hastily gathered belongings; others by foot, with just the clothes on their backs.  Many also bring with them horrific tales of killings and other abuses by assailants they cannot forget.

South Sudan is simultaneously drowning and drying as the climate crisis tightens its grip. An unprecedented flooding crisis has swallowed large swathes of the country while other parts are grappling with devastating drought.

Like most of the people fleeing the fighting in Sudan, Safa is dealing with trauma. After living without water and electricity for days after the breakout of conflict in the country on 15 April, her family woke up to the sound of explosions.

The commitment to provide safe and quality food to affected populations is not only driven by the immediate need to address hunger and malnutrition but also by the responsibility to ensure that donors’ contributions are effectively used to purchase good, nutritious food.
