The project aims to mitigate the risks posed by climate shocks and their impact on communities, while enhancing food security for those most at risk. ROME/JUBA – The United Nations World Food Programme is in a race against time to mobilize vital funds to feed millions of people in South Sudan as hunger advances on a population in dire need of humanitarian assistance. Catastrophic flooding over recent months is pushing the country and its people towards a precipice as the year ends amid intense political instability.

The devastating storm brought life-threatening winds, heavy rain and severe storm surges, upending lives and livelihoods. It left thousands of people homeless, uprooting trees, downing power lines, littering roads with debris and cutting off water supply in several island states in the Caribbean.

Water on tap is a pipe dream for many. Over 70 percent of the world’s food-insecure people are in areas where water availability is constrained. The rest live in areas where there may be a great deal of water but access may be limited and quality may be poor.

 World Food Programme (WFP) teams across the Caribbean are taking stock of Hurricane Beryl impacts after it struck Jamaica on Wednesday afternoon as a dangerous category 4 hurricane.

WFP is working around the clock to scale up our operations in Sudan to reach millions who have been plunged into uncertainty and hunger by the outbreak of violence in mid-April. This theft of humanitarian food and assets totally undermines these operations at a critical time for the people of Sudan.
