Aida is 10 years old and lives with her family in the town of Kant. She lives 25 km from Bishkek, the capital city of Kyrgyzstan — a country of 6.5 million people where the World Food Programme (WFP) assists more than 120,000 people. Aida is a top student in her class at Zubkov Primary School. She excels in subjects like mathematics and biology.

WFP has provided High Energy Biscuits and rations of wheat flour, salt, vegetable oil and pulses. Distributions across both provinces are ongoing, while needs assessment teams are gathering information in earthquake-hit areas to uncover the full extent of the damage and determine priority humanitarian needs. ‘’This is an emergency on top of an emergency.

The security situation is still highly precarious. WFP is considering locations where humanitarian access is assured while strongly considering security, capacity and access-related considerations.

“Amid already worrying levels of hunger and malnutrition, we are obliged to choose between the hungry and the starving, leaving millions of families scrambling for their next meal,” said Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP’s Country Director and Representative in Afghanistan.

“Thanks to the pause, our teams have been in action on the ground, going into areas we haven't reached for a long time. What we see is catastrophic. There’s a risk of famine and starvation on our watch and to prevent it, we need to be able to bring in food at scale and distribute it safely,” said WFP’s Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe Region, Corinne Fleischer.
