Driven by intense monsoon rains since late June, severe flooding has impacted over 200,000 people in Myanmar, with many temporarily displaced.

In Zimbabwe, a country beset by drought, the World Food Programme (WFP) supports smallholder farmers with soil conservation and similar projects for revitalising natural resources, to improve access to food. This year it has served more than 138,800 people across 12 districts in the country – Binga, Chimanimani Chipinge Mt.

It offers insights on the effects of earmarked, flexible and multi-year contributions on WFP’s programme implementation and adaptation.The aim was to take stock of available evidence to serve internal reflections regarding earmarking, and flexible and predictable funding.

After facing successive crises and devastating natural hazards over the last years, many people in the Caribbean are struggling to earn a living and meet their food and other critical needs.

The latest conflict in the Eastern DRC has resulted in catastrophic conditions for the local population. Fierce fighting has, over the past two weeks, moved 25 kilometres’ west of Goma towards the town of Sake, where children and their families are caught in a deadly crossfire. “Children in DRC need peace now,” said Grant Leaity, UNICEF Representative in the DRC.

The project aims to mitigate the risks posed by climate shocks and their impact on communities, while enhancing food security for those most at risk. Its primary goals are to engage communities to reduce disasters risks, ensure sustainable livelihoods all year-around and strengthen national and local disaster management systems.

The funds will also help WFP to provide special nutritious foods to treat and prevent moderately acute malnutrition among children under five, and pregnant and nursing women. “This contribution has come at the right time as it will cover the urgent needs of refugees in the first months of the year,” said WFP Representative and Country Director in Algeria Imed Khanfir.
