Indonesia's rainy season has begun with below-average rainfall, peaking in early 2024, notably affecting southern Sumatra, northern Sulawesi, southern Kalimantan, Java, and Papua. While over half of the provinces were food secure by December 2023, some face deteriorating food security compared to the previous year.

Some of the challenges the Ambassador witnessed firsthand include the poor living conditions in the camps and continued restrictions on movement and job opportunities. The camps are highly susceptible to hazards like fires and climate shocks such as floods and cyclones, which deepen the population’s vulnerability each time they strike.

A historic drought - the worst food crisis yet - has devastated more than 27 million lives across the region. Some 21 million children are malnourished. For many communities, this is the worst food crisis in decades. October marks the start of the lean season and each month is expected to be worse than the previous one until harvests next year in March/April.

With this contribution WFP will work closely with the Government of The Gambia to distribute emergency food assistance to severely food insecure people, and provide fortified blended foods to malnourished children under 5, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

This figure represents a four-million increase in the number of people who are food-insecure compared to the November 2023 forecast and highlights a fourfold increase over the last five years. The situation is particularly worrying in conflict-affected northern Mali, where an estimated 2,600 people are likely to experience catastrophic hunger (IPC/CH phase 5).

Japan’s contribution comes at a critical time, with more than 260,000 people facing crisis and emergency food insecurity levels at the peak of the lean season from October to March next year, according to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis.   “We are very grateful to the Government of Japan,” says Deepak Shah, WFP’s Head of Office in Eswatini.
