Despite global abundance, nearly 800 million people in developing countries are chronically hungry. Wherever hunger is a crisis, WFP is on the front line, meeting the nutritional needs of today while providing opportunities for tomorrow. This Annual Report illustrates the formidable nature and scale of WFP’s efforts to combat hunger in the world’s most inaccessible areas.

WFP in Myanmar implements relief activities categorised by three target groups: continuous life-saving relief assistance to internally displaced people (IDPs); seasonal protracted relief assistance to particularly food-insecure and vulnerable households; and short-term emergency assistance to populations affected by natural disasters and conflicts.

In 2001 was a year of challenge. Continuing major needs in the Horn of Africa, Central Asia and North Korea were met, while WFP forged ahead with efforts to fight hunger at its core: poverty and lack of opportunity. Through its decentralised structure, WFP responded quickly to emergency relief needs in Central America, Southern Africa and Asia.

As 2004 opened, we were providing relief to thousands of earthquake victims in Bam, Iran. Tragically, as 2005 approached, WFP was responding to the unprecedented loss of life and livelihoods in tsunami-ravaged areas around the Indian Ocean.

In rural areas of Myanmar, less than half of all children complete primary school. High dropout rates in primary school remain a serious concern, especially in remote areas. In 1996, WFP launched school feeding in northern Rakhine, which has some of the lowest education and food security indicators  in Myanmar.

The 2013 Annual Performance Report is now available in a special online edition that explains WFP's key achievements last year with simple, straightforward visuals.

While there were no catastrophic events like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami or the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, there were several large natural disasters in 2006, for example the May earthquake in Indonesia that killed thousands of people. There was also a significant number of smaller disasters. Fourteen different sudden natural disasters required funds from the Immediate Response Account.
