2005 was the most challenging year the humanitarian aid world had faced since World War II.

Despite recent progress, undernutrition rates in Myanmar continue to be among the highest of the region. The pace of progress has been uneven and the country is facing significant challenges: Myanmar is off course to meet the World Health Assembly targets for wasting, anemia and stunting. Reducing undernutrition and eliminating food insecurity have been WFP’s priorities.

Low access to fortified products, in rural areas and particularly in the arid lands, remains a huge constraint to meeting the populations’ micronutrient needs. Fortification at the small scale mill has the potential to deliver nutrients to large segments of the population without requiring radical changes in food consumption patterns.

By the end of 2007, the world was confronted with a new and very different emergency: rising food and fuel prices threatened to push millions more people into hunger, driving up the cost of providing life-saving food assistance.

Despite global abundance, nearly 800 million people in developing countries are chronically hungry. Wherever hunger is a crisis, WFP is on the front line, meeting the nutritional needs of today while providing opportunities for tomorrow. This Annual Report illustrates the formidable nature and scale of WFP’s efforts to combat hunger in the world’s most inaccessible areas.

WFP in Myanmar implements relief activities categorised by three target groups: continuous life-saving relief assistance to internally displaced people (IDPs); seasonal protracted relief assistance to particularly food-insecure and vulnerable households; and short-term emergency assistance to populations affected by natural disasters and conflicts.
