This strategic partnership aims to enhance WFP’s ability to make data-driven decisions in emergency responses, leading to more efficient food distribution, faster damage assessments and improved monitoring of cash-based assistance programmes.

“Amid already worrying levels of hunger and malnutrition, we are obliged to choose between the hungry and the starving, leaving millions of families scrambling for their next meal,” said Hsiao-Wei Lee, WFP’s Country Director and Representative in Afghanistan.

Some 12.1 million people, more than 50% of the population, are currently food insecure and a further 2.9 million are at risk of sliding into hunger.

An initial US$3 million grant from the OPEC Fund will seed the facility with additional funding mobilized from co-financiers, including multilateral development banks, development finance institutions, and other donors. The facility seeks to mobilize US$500 million in investments by 2030 and will kick-off with pilot initiatives in sub –Saharan Africa.

WFP commissioned a qualitative study to generate evidence about the potential barriers hindering the socio-economic integration of refugee population in hosting communities as well as to reveal existing opportunities to organize and establish sustainable livelihoods for refugee and local population.
