Since WFP Kenya’s Helpline was set up in 2013, it has received almost 10,000 calls. The Helpline is a fundamental part of WFP’s complaints-and-feedback mechanism, and is particularly critical when WFP introduces a major change in its activities. For example, in 2015, calls increased more than tenfold when WFP introduced Bamba Chakula cash transfers into the refugee camps in Kakuma.

Rice fortification is the enrichment of rice with essential vitamins and minerals post-harvesting to increase its nutritional value and is similar to the fortification of wheat and maize flour or salt, all of which have been proven effective at a large scale and are recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WFP’s role in fighting undernutrition is not only to treat it but also to prevent it being part of its contribution to addressing sustainable development goal 2 of ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Kenya is home to 600,000 refugees, the majority fleeing conflict in Somalia and South Sudan. This is the second largest refugee population in Africa, after Ethiopia. In Kenya, refugees live in camps with restricted movement and are not allowed to work for pay outside the camps. Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps are located in the remote and food-insecure regions of northern Kenya.

This is the third annual evaluation report produced under WFP’s Evaluation Policy (2016–2021). Part 1 explains the purpose of evaluation and how it is evolving in line with WFP’s strategic direction and trends in WFP’s operating environment.

WFP is providing the refugees settling in Kalobeyei the food basket in cash, with only SuperCereal (a highly nutritious fortified food) distributed in-kind. WFP is providing each refugee with 1,400 Kenyan shillings per month. Kalobeyei settlement will have a large business park, which will be shared equally among the refugees and the local population.  

Low access to fortified products, in rural areas and particularly in the arid lands, remains a huge constraint to meeting the populations’ micronutrient needs. Fortification at the small scale mill has the potential to deliver nutrients to large segments of the population without requiring radical changes in food consumption patterns.

An estimated 1.25 million people will be acutely food insecure and require humanitarian assistance over the next six months until February 2017.
