The first WFP food supplies destined for 13,000 people at risk of famine in Sudan’s Darfur have crossed the Adre border from Chad, after it was reopened by the Sudanese authorities following a six-month closure.

“We are facing an unprecedented global food crisis and all signs suggest we have not yet seen the worst. For the last three years hunger numbers have repeatedly hit new peaks. Let me be clear: things can and will get worse unless there is a large scale and coordinated effort to address the root causes of this crisis.

Since 15 August, WFP has delivered food to almost 300,000 people in Amhara and Afar.

Inadequate availability of efficient millet processing equipment in our country, is one of the key limitations of the millet ecosystem. The closure of schools across the region due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has meant that large numbers of vulnerable children have been unable to access formal learning, school meals and selected nutrition and health services for extended periods.
