From January to September 2020, WFP reached 6.7 million food insecure girls, boys, women and men across the country with food assistance. This included 4.5 million seasonally food insecure people, more than 290,000 people affected by the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 more than 200,00 returnees and refugees.

Three consecutive years of drought coupled with a sharp recession triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic will leave a third of the population in Southern Madagascar struggling to put food on the table. With severe malnutrition rates continuing to spiral and many children forced to beg in order to help their families eat, urgent action is required to prevent a humanitarian crisis.

Thousands of people have crossed into South Sudan as they flee ongoing conflict in Sudan. WFP is on the ground and supporting the new arrivals, but this additional response is putting pressure on an already severely underfunded operation.

DRC’s humanitarian emergency is especially challenging, given its combination of widespread inter-ethnic conflict, large-scale internal displacement, a protracted Ebola epidemic, donor fatigue and huge gaps between funding levels and requirements.

Over the past year, WFP’s engineers and partners have been conducting disaster risk reduction activities for cyclone and monsoon preparedness and have steadily improved camp conditions and humanitarian access. Activities focus on improving and establishing roads, strengthening and clearing drains, reinforcing bridges in the camps, and reforestation.
