The evaluation was carried out in 2023 and aligned with the WFP's Country Strategic Plan (CSP) across  key strategic outcomes (SO) 2 and 3.

“Refugee populations around the world are one of the most vulnerable,” said Eddie Rowe, WFP Zimbabwe Country Representative & Director. “At a time when Zimbabwe and Southern Africa is faced with massive humanitarian needs because of drought and economic woes, this already at-risk community is struggling even more.

WFP will use the funds in Kasai Central province to provide food for more than 2,000 children, and to train more than 4,000 pregnant women and nursing mothers on better nutrition, hygiene, breastfeeding and health habits. WFP will also provide food to the broader community during the lean or ‘hungry’ season between harvests as well as promoting good nutrition and health practices.

Highlights Because of ongoing political unrest in Burundi, thousands are fleeing into neighbouring countries. As of 20 July 13,584 Burundian refugees have been registered in DRC. The majority are in South Kivu. Approximately 500 are in Katanga province, and just over 60 are in Maniema province.  

Refugees from Burundi continue to cross the borders into neighboring countries. Since the beginning of April, more than 175,000 Burundians have arrived in the DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Food stocks are stretched and WFP requires immediate contributions to meet the needs of vulnerable people in Burundi as well as new arrivals and existing refugees in the four countries.

Highlights Following political unrest in Burundi thousands are fleeing to neighbouring countries. Between 27 and 29 June a new influx of approximately 1,500 Burundian refugees fled into DRC.
